At the age of 18 months most children are afraid of anything in a costume! It is something big, hairy, and loud coming right at them!
Santa has a LONG beard and a hat! They cant see his whole face!! My son is terrified of him too... and Santa is Uncle Gene.... So , with all the frills... they dont understand who it is..
Good luck and Merry Christmas!!!

I honestly think it is the facial hair. I have seen plenty of children, my son included, freak out at a man's facial hair only to see him clean shaven in a few weeks and be fine with him. My own husband used to have a beard and my godchild was terrified of him. He shaved it for a job interview and my god child had no problems.
Plus, 1 1/2 seems to be a funny stranger age. Some they love, others they freak out over. Last year my son cried hysterically when sitting in Santa's lap, this year he runs up to all the store Santas.
Good luck , you will get that great pic.

LOL my favorite picture of my son with Santa is from when he was 1 1/2 years old...he was terrified and screaming! My son has always been very outgoing and social boy but still to this day is a little unsure when he first sits on Santa's lap. I wonder if it's because of his beard and how big he seems. Who knows LOL

Hi I have two children 7 and 4 and I also had this problem. I believe that they get scared because they hear about this person throughout the year and when they finally get to meet him the excitement is to much and they are to nervous to go near him. By next year your son should be OK when he sees Santa. I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic new year.

I think some kids are afraid of masks. In Santa's case the beard. Santa has always freaked my 7-year-old out as does any other character in a costume. She won't even wear a mask herself.
I guess it's the fear of not knowing what is behind the mask.

I think its becuase Santa Claus is such a shocker in looks. My little sister had the same problem when she was younger. I think its becuase when children are very small they can only distinguise people by their looks. Think about it, you see your mom and dad and a few others each day and then all the sudden a giant guy in all red with a deep voice who wants you on your lap? Id be scared if I didnt know better! :)

i think it because us as parents want them to take a picture with him and sit on his lap but in their day to day life they have never even seen anyone resemble him with all that hair and all the red. I honestly can see way young children are afraid of him, as young as children are they feel that the mall Santa is probably tried and really doesn't want to be working as a Santa and children can sense that and it makes them uncomfortable.

Well, Santa only comes around once a year, and he wouldnt remember last year. New person, new experience, it'll be the same with the Easter Bunny too. Take your pictures and enjoy them now. Then later you can use them for blackmail or hang them on his graduation poster.

My kids were both scared of any "dressed up" character.
you will be happy to know that now that they are 5 and 8 they are growing out of it and dont mind saying hello to Santa
