Well, If you eat a few hours before sleeping, your body has time to work off most of the calories from the food you ate, But if you eat just before bed, the calories dont have anywhere to go, and are usually stored as fat. Thats why dieters are incouraged to
- Get lots of exercise
- Eat six Small meals a day
- And drink LOTS of water, to keep hydrated of course.
P.S. Just a tip, drinking water that is slightly warm is much healthier as it isnt as much of a shock when it enters your system. :)
Hope this helps.

The main reason most people say to do this is because if you eat right before going to bed, that food will be turned directly into fat since the energy it would create is not being used. But if you eat it a number of hours before sleeping you are moving around for a little while, using up that energy rather than wasting it

Good question, because people become less active while asleep and less likely to digest the food stuff, and get "acid brush" or indigestion which is a comon problem, besides if people don't move after eating "that is a problem worldwide" they get overweight!
late meals have even been related with having bad dreams in some books!

It is because the food will not just stay in your stomach to become to fat. Besides, you will more chance to have bad dream with full stomach.

it actually doesn't effect you that much, if at all.. but it is thought that it is bad for your metabolism or that it all turns into fat..
