Its appropriate if it works in with the theme of your power point, its distracting if it does not.

It should be fine as long as the photos are pretty simple (for example, a photo of a river might be nice, but not a river with a colorful sunset, mountain range, forest AND hills in the same frame.), and as long as you can easily read the text over the photos (a solid-color text box would help the text stand out.)
You can also make the photos semi-transparent (that's called a "watermark") so they are more subtle and don't cause so much of a distraction.
Obviously, this depends on your professor. If he/she is very big on "distracting colors," etc. in your presentations, then you might want to ask before trying this. You could print out a couple of slides to show them for approval.

well, it depends on what you consider "beautiful nature photos" .....
only because you ask if it would be "innapropirate".....flowers are not innapropriate, but nude pictures might be. Even tho they may be tastefull, it may very well not be appropriate for your class, or the subject of your presentation.
If you are truely talking about actual nature photos, then using them would be fine (provided they complimented your theme). However, have them somewhat transparant in the bckground so it does not distract from the main part of the presentation.

Let see.You saw this hot guy walking toward you.Would you pay attention to what he say??You will busy checking him out. That would possibly happen if you put some beautiful pic that doesn't go with theme.Creative can go along with professionalism, but creative can either go to the right track and if the wrong track,it can be a totally disaster.Careful, dare to be different is bold but it your grade at the stake.Risk it if you got what it take

Go crazy. I'm sure the professor has seen all the layouts in the book and would be refreshed by a change of pace. In fact a friend of mine used a Matrix Theme for one of this doctoral presentations.

Personally, if I'm one of your audiences, I'd be distracted. I'd rather see something that's simple enough and do not have too much distraction such as that nature photos.

Well if it will serve as a distraction then no, you shouldn't. But if it can work into your project, and you state you reasoning behind it, I think it will come off as clever, and creative.

I think it would be nice to have the photos on one side of the page, but I think it would be too distracting behind the text.
Hope that helps!

It really deppends on the subject, besides being distracting it can be irrelevant, try to relate the backgound setting to sometiong @ least related to a minimum to the subject, otherwise overkill is a possibility
