I never thought about it that way until now, but now that you mention it, I can see that distinctive trend in my own family--all the religious people suffer from depression, and those of us who don't believe in an afterlife are okay--weird, isn't it?

you are also young. Probably have not yet endured some of the adversity life gives us. When I was your age I believed as do you. It was easier to see good in people then as well. An afterlife however is no reason to believe. People who do believe would be better off if they kept that part a secret. It would be easy to believe that dieing is like going to sleep forever, but as anyone who has died and been brought back who remembers the experience will tell you it just isn't so. One could just believe those who have theorys about this being some natural chemical reaction but if it were would most people have such similar memories and what of those few who describ a hell like experience and when they come back their behavior drastically changes and becomes more positive.
long term Depresion is not usually the result of something you think, it is usually something you have done or not done or a chemical imbalance, which also may be caused by behaviors.
Enjoy life now, and when things get tough and you need a friend just remember Jesus would like to be your friend even when others won't or there are no others around.

Hmmmmm............. I don't really think we'd all be depressed. Nothing in this world is infinite, from the animals to the plants to the stars, everything has a lifespan, and relatively few things actually have as much of a conscience as we do. But I agree with Benjamin Rush, the mind naturally leads us to ponder religious principles and an afterlife.

I don't believe in an afterlife either and I'm not one bit depressed. Religion is just there to help control the power.

why ask a question and then answer it yourself?
Besides, even if religion and a belief in an afterlife did not exist, man would simply create these ideas.....like we did in the first place

If no thought of an afterlife existed, no we would not be depressed. if we suddenly "proved" to religious folk that no afterlife existed, they would be WAY depressed.

People are generally terrified of that which they do not understand. Fear causes anger and chaos. This explains many of the world's issues in my opinion.
No, I do not think we'd be depressed. I think we'd be too stupid to be depressed. Curiosity drives the search for knowledge and lack of knowledge causes fear and chaos.

No. Indeed, the idea is preposterous. Why should one be depressed by knowing the facts?
