If you are concerned about fraud, you should get a credit reporting bureau to put a fraud alert on your credit report. That way, if anyone is using your social security number to get credit, the creditor will always call you first before extending credit. If you do this with one credit bureau, that bureau will report it to all the others. This lasts for a few months, I think 90 days. You can renew the fraud alert afterward if you are still concerned. As part of the process, you will get a free credit report from each of the bureaus.

You can get a copy of your credit report, which will allow you to see if there are unknown accounts or inquiries, or even addresses and names, and this does not make a hard inquiry on your credit file. You can get a free copy at www.annualcreditreport.com, or call 1-800-685-1111 to request a free copy from Equifax ( you are entitled to a free copy if you suspect fraudulent information may be reporting on your credit file).
The inquiry that is posted when you obtain your credit report will not affect your credit score, nor do future lenders see that inquiry.
