I did download skype but then it blocked my internet explorer from coming up so I trashed it...

yeah..sure..
if ur friends in china..have comp and internet access...
why not?
in yahoo or msn or skype ... u can talk as long as u can...

Yes you have facility to talk from PC to PC in MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messeger, Google Talk and Skype

almost all messengers nowadays include VoIP (voice over IP). Depending on the quality of your conversation and how much you want to spend, well thats your decision. Programs like Skype cost money. MSN Messenger, Yahoo, AOL Instant Messenger, those are all free, though they are one way communication.

Yes. Both of you just need to have and an email address with the servise provider.

MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger,Google chat & a lot more...

There are one wall called "Great Firewall" in China.
The signals are censored by typical routers.
If you wanna talk with Yahoo or MSN messenger, you may find difficulties in some places (I don't mean everywhere).

Try Skype, it is the last resort.

yea, I used email and IM when I was in China and Tibet. I had no problems, I went to internet cafes.
