Yup, it's a garbanzo bean. The most popular things are to take it straight out of a can as a salad topping, or you can make the ever-popular hummus (chick pea dip). Or falafel (fried chick pea patties).

Oh yeah, I think you usually see these beans in minestrone, too.

There are the canned kind and the dried peas kind. The dried peas have to be soaked either overnight if cooking in morning or vice versa. They are very nutritious.

There can be used in some many ways in cooking:

* To decorate rice and hummus dishes

* To make falafel: Small croquette of mashed chick peas or fava beans seasoned with sesame seeds

*To make hummus: A very popular thick spread or dip made from mashed chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice and garlic; used especially as a dip for pita bread with a plate of Shawarma lamb or chicken and in sandwiches or served as side dishes with grilled meats; and originating from the Middle East.

*In Salad recipes.

These a just a few examples.

Garbanzo bean or ceci is another name for these members of the pea family. In the US they are usually sold canned or in a jar.
