Lets say someone has scars all down their arm and wrist , and from looking at it, it obviously looks like that person intended to hurt themselves many times in the past. Could that keep the person from joining the military?

Well...I guess it's pretty obvious that person is me...so I guess I'll just say the past is the past. I can't change what I did, but it did change me. I look at life a whole lot differently now, and from all that I have been through I can honestly say I've become more emotionally and mentally tough. Kind of like basic training. You go in, and come out different person. Tougher. This may sound silly to some people, but I want to join so badly. If they did mentally evaluate me and see I'm not that person anymore maybe they'll give me a chance. I know what it's like in the military. And I know I can take it. My best friend was in the Air Force for 13 years and my grandfather 11. And from their point of views, they know I can too. I guess I'll just have to see what happens

Well, it would not help the persons chances I believe. Their best bet would be to be totally up front and honest about it when asked. If there was mental counseling, best to say so before there is anything set in concrete so as not to be considered fraudulent by omitting details. W eall did things when we were kids that we aren't proud of, or maybe something that we wouldn't want everyone to know about. But in an all volunteer military, they seem to be very choosy these days. And the fact is, a lot of other depend on you in the military to hold up yopur own load. Hard to sat for sure Amber. But best to be honest about it if asked.

If your intention is to join up, and you admit to hurting yourself,.. you stand a fair chance not to get in. Its terrible to say, but your almost better lieing and saying some type of accident or injury occurred, if they even ask.

But on a side note, I would recommend someone who has scars up and down there arm might not want to join such a loving organization as the military, depending on their current situation, for the simple fact of, its not the most positively mentally productive organization in the world.

You should talk with a recruiter about it. They would be able to answer any questions you have.
