That's correct. You will need a television that features
a resolution of 1080i or 1080p. Read more about the
different resolution formats on Wikipedia.org...

You can get 1080i sources many ways: HDTV, gaming consoles, high def DVD players. The better question to ask would 720p or 1080i look better on your TV?
The answer is 720p because the TV will have to scale the image less. You will always achieve the best image quality when your display is closest to the original source in resolution.
I don't know if you have an LCD computer monitor or laptop at home. But, if you have ever changed your resolution to something other than the native resolution, it looks all fuzzy and pixelated. Same logic for video.

Very few things actually output at 1080i, and those that do would naturally convert down to 720p, still a very high quality picture.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will output at those levels, but you'd be better off watching some of those movies in 720p anyway, IMHO.
Hardware isn't going to do 1080p unless the resolution is a little bit higher. And unless you're a total videophile, you aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 1080i and 720p - but if you really want to count the lines of resolution, you get faster picture at a 720 lines of progressive than 1080 lines of interlaced picture.
1080p is pretty much marketing hype, since no broadcaster in their right mind is going to tape shows in 1080p, much less deliver 1080p content to your house. Maybe in 10 years, but not anytime soon.
You're sitting pretty well right now with whatever you've got.
Hope this helps. :)
