Why are parents letting their kids get on the internet for other than homework? I don't get this. All the predators out there and even sting operations for them, then no one addresses the parents for letting a 12 yr old on the internet for a social life. A 12 yr old should not have their own computer with internet in their room, simple as that. They should only be on the family computer for learning purposes. Why are you parents being so leanient on this? I was not allowed to date until I was 16 and did not get a phone in my room until age 14. I turned out just fine and my kids will be just fine, you can count on that. Learn how to tell your kids NO once in a while instead of being lazy parents who just want them out of their hair. They get enough computer exposure in school so don't use the excuse of "they need to learn the computer for the future and to be up with the times." Protect your kids and we would not have to worry about internet predators. They would not exist.

I agree with you 100%. LOL i didn't have a computer until I was 18. I also didn't have a cell phone until I turned 21 and paid for it and the plan myself. lol Times and people change, sometimes for the worse. At least we will know how to protect our children ;)

I totally agree with you on this matter. I know this may make me sound kinda old but when I was growing up, I didn't even know what the internet was! I got my first computer about 5 years ago! My parents didn't ever give me a phone in my own room. My daughter will not have access to the internet without my constant supervision and I believe that the schools allow too much internet access without the proper supervision. I am contemplating home-schooling my daughter. Atleast then I know that my daughter won't be able to get on-line and talk to sexual predators if she is home-schooled.

Because unlike you, we trust and communicate with our children. Obviously you have some control issues, probably underlying from your parents being so controlling. As far as internet predators not existing, you are wrong about that. That's about as rational as saying if there were no more sugar, there would be no obesity problems. We talk with our kids, sit down and help them learn safe ways to surf the net. We put on parental controls. We are not afraid of the new technology age. Your poor children will probably have no friends in a couple years.

As someone who's used the internet her entire life...if you taught your children well enough you wouldn't have to worry now would you? My father's a computer engineer and my first memories of him are us tearing apart a computer and reassembling it so it'd work better. I've had internet access since I can remember and I've never been lured away by an internet predator. Because I knew better! People on the internet lie, about their age, about their gender, about their motives. That's why you never talk to someone you don't already know IRL. And if you do talk to them you sure a heck don't meet up with them in a shadowy corner of an abandoned lot like some of those twits. And your children do need to know their way around computers for the future! We're becoming a techno nation...the entire world is! We're in an age where a C++ certification is like a high school diploma, everyone has one! In order to make a name for yourself you need to know more, understand more, and experience more at a younger age. My hubby's already reading Hawking to our daughter and she's only a toddler. The internet isn't good or evil, it simply is. Just like everything else in the world it's the people on it who make it either...and those people are found in equal proportions everywhere. In your schools, in the shopping centers, in the daycares, everywhere. Keeping your child away from the internet because you think it'll expose them to something bad is like teaching abstinence only in schools. Either way your child is still going to be exposed...only now they won't know how to protect themselves.

Hi Ave,
ur rite. But not all children are spoiled. Some may be self controlled without their parents advices or guidances. Its the work of the parents to instruct their child about the do's and do nots of internet websites. it depends more on the family background. See for instance in America a mother had sex with her own children who were 6 and 5 years respectively and also made her daughter indulge in sex with her son. So it all depends on the bought up of the child by their parents.
