My girlfriend found a check in the lobby for $3,500 and cashed it. It turned out she now owes the bank another $2,500. Could anything criminally happen here? I haven't spoken to her yet and I don't think I should. Am I over reacting? Should I tell her parents? She said she needed money but steeling is not the answer.

She can be charged for fraud. You will have to check where you live what kind of things can happen to her, but she can hurt herself alot for doing this.

First of all what ever would make her think that it would work?

She will now lose creditablity to her name. It will be harder for her to get loans. Some banks even have the right to close your account and no longer let you have an account with that bank.

You can also be charged crimanally and you will have a crimal record. You may even be fined or end up serving time.

What your girlfriend did was very stupid. What was she thinking? Anyone with common sense knows that a check without your name on it will never fly.

You better off without her.

I mean, I guess it should make you question a lot of things about her. Her morals, her sanity (because that is a felony). We are talking about alot of money here. She could be looking at jail time. If she could do that, what else might she be capable of? I think that it is good that you have seen this side of her now before you and her became more invovled. I think you should tell her parents. This is not a slap on the wrist kind of crime. They need to know in case she needs legal help.

I'm surprized she was able to cash it. I assume the check was not in her name.

Not very honorable of her. She is not an honest person. Yes there could be criminal charges as this is fraud.

What does she need the money for? Is this the kind of woman you want to have in your life? Would you sleep well at night?

Uttering and Publishing carries 3 to 5 year jail sentence per violation. Plus restitution of all cost involved and very easy to convict on because there is a paper trail with signatures, addresses and accounts.

She is a thief in no other words --that shows lack of moral standards and I'd say to go the other way as fast as you can--You are reacting as any other HONEST person would you are conserned because you would have never done that RUN AWAY and dont look back there are plenty of HONEST fish in the sea

I don't understand. How did she cash it if it wasn't written out to her? Was it a blank cheque?

Whoever wrote the cheque will find out and be pissed off. I'm sure they can trace it to her too. I don't know what you should do but make sure you do NOT use the money or help her in any way because then you will be liable as well.

Who really knows where that money came from or who it was intended for.......however I am a strong believer in what goes around comes around so one day your Girlfriend may be on the opposite end of a similar experience.

YES!
You are absolutely right. I would be mad too. What she did was steal. I would not want her for my girl friend anymore. I could not trust her.Trust is everything in a relationship. I recommend to stay away from her.

She should have handed the check in to authorities! It's not exactly classified as stealing but you definatly have a right to be mad as it shows an untrustworthy side to her.

you have every right to be mad about it and it was very stupid what she did.. I don't how ever think it would be your place to tell on her though... let her get in trouble on her own for this, which she will.. you should talk to her and convince her to tell on her self and just face up to the consequences of her actions... she could go to jail for forgery and theft and most likely will...
