I want to get him an all-in-one printer that has a scanner, copier, printer etc. so that he can use it for lots of things. However, it also needs to be able to print pictures from his camera that are high quality. He has a Fuji camera and I want to surprise him this christmas with a good printer but I don't know the first place to start my search. Please, can you recommend some good brands and models? thanks!

Most people that are serious about their prints will either recommend a Canon or an Epson. They offer models that use lots of ink cartridges to get the best color accuracy. The best models for prints will not be your all-in-one machines.

If your nephew is happy with the prints he gets from Walmart/Walgreens/big box store, then he will likely be happy with something less than a "serious" photo oriented printer. When you step down to that market then HP becomes a resonable brand choice. Just remember that ink and paper costs can add up quickly so if that maintenance cost is a factor to him then you should include it as a factor in which printer you purchase.

I purchased a Canon PIXMA MP600 recently. The ink tanks can be purchased seperately so say you run out of red ink but still have yellow and cyan, all you have to do is buy the red ink tank. You aren't wasting ink anymore!

The pictures when printed come out wonderfully also. The only thing this printer doesn't do is fax; however, they do have models higher up that have that option if necessary. The printer is very easy to use in my opinion and Canon is one of the most reliable names out there. I just purchased a Canon camera and the quality and color reproduction is very accurate.

Check out different electronics stores and read the customer reviews. That will help a great deal in determining which printers would best suit your (his) needs.

Good luck!

I am using an Epson Photo RX 500 which is an 'all in one'. I've had it a couple of years now and I am highly delighted with it. It has been superceded by a more up-to-date model - RX700 appears to be the latest, but by and large they are they same. They have 'pict bridge' capabilities which means your nephew could print direct from his camera if he so wishes. There are functions like printing thumbnails of all the pictures on a card which might be useful.

Someone has already mentioned the cost of replacing ink, which is a problem with all ink-jets. However, I've always used compatibles and never had a problem. What you cant use with an all in one if the direct feed systems (where you use large bottles of ink feeding the heads from outside the machine) as you can't have the lid open as it forms the scanner unit and the machine is rendered inoperable when it is open.

The most important thing is the price of the ink cartridges.

The printer will be cheap but the cost of replacing the cartridges can be huge
