Where does it say he built the Church on Peter's faith? He said He would build it on Peter, not Peter's faith, or even Jesus Himself. The Greek is very specific.

The name Peter, means rock. Peter was the first to say Jesus is the "Christ the son of the living God"(Matthew 16:16). Jesus said, "You are Peter (petros) and on this rock (petra) i will build my church", is seems to be a play on words, since Peters name means rock, Jesus is going to build His church on a rock . Peter was the first to proclaim the Gospel and the first to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, in a sense, Peter is the foundation, the rock which the church was built upon.

No Jesus founded his church on himself as the chief cornerstone with the Apostles and the prophets forming the rest of the foundation.

Ephesians 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

Jesus wasn't only speaking to Peter but to the others who were also with Him. He was talking about building the church on the confession of faith that He was the Christ, the Son of God.

Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter (petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Petros is a small pebble while petra is a large boulder.

Not on Peter himself, but on the amount of faith that Peter was showing.

No, He absolutely did not build His church on Peter.

No. Jesus told Peter that the church would be built on the rejected cornerstone.

The one that was rejected was Jesus, He was talking about himself. Peter understood this.

Unfortunately, the Catholics did not.

The one that was rejected was Jesus Christ, Peter never claimed to be anything but a follower of Jesus Christ and he was never rejected. (Yes, he denied Jesus, but never rejected him.)

I don't believe so. I believe Jesus founded the church on the truth that Peter spoke, namely that he believed that Jesus was the Son of God. Belief in Christ is the beginning of salvation.
