GT is a Schwinn in disguise, they used to be good about 10years ago. Same with Mongoose, the lost all credibility when they started selling at Wal-Mart, all crap now.

for $500 you won't get much for you money, this is about the lowest price for a true off road ride able bike. These will be OK bikes from:
Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, Giant, Haro, Gary fisher, Kline, Kona, Bianchi, etc

Bang for you buck would be a Jamis, they almost always have a slightly better component specification than any one else in the same price range. However if I was buying in the $1000 and up I'd go with another brand. Most magazine reviews Jamis wins the "bang for the buck" category.

Diamond back makes more of a "hucker" style mtb bike which could be a good deal in that price range too, might be a little heavy tho.

You should check out the Specialized Rockhopper A1. At $500, you're probably only going to come up with front suspension bikes. This one is a solid, reliable bike.
