I've heard from various sources including "Without a Paddle" that they are bulletproof. Are they as good as the Chevy 350?

The 318 is a very good reliable engine, the early ones had a problem with the cross-over passage in the intake manifold plugging with carbon and overheating the carb, burning valves(mostly because they were designed to run on leaded gas),and blowing intake gaskets. The 318 was greatly improved in the late 80's/early 90's(magnum series). I would take one over a Ford small block and most GM small blocks. As long as you put fuel injection or an after market carb(factory carb's were the biggest problem) on it,you will have a good solid engine.

Dodge 318

nick hasn't got a clue. the dodge 318 (5.2) is one of the most reliable engines ever made, even more reliable than the 350,and can be talked into producing more power than the 350 can.the u.s army which can do destructive testing on stuff if they want, has given the slant-6,318,and the 360 an ultra reliable rating.many of the military 318's (back when they used gas engines as well as diesel) have ran them on basically anything burnable, with an without oil. the 318 has also spawned several next of kin better known as the 3.9v6 (318 with 2 missing cylinders)and the 360 ( 318 on steriods ). you can also find influence in the v-10 engine. the only reason dodge stopped making the 318 was because of fuel efficiency (it couldnt be made anymore efficient) and this was after some 40 years in production. the 318 was also a very popular police motor because it responded well to modification like better carbs, exhaust etc.when the v6 in my dakota dies (if it does) i plan to drop in a 318. in short if u have a 318 keep it,if ya can get one,get it.

If you find a good example that has been maintained properly and has had a good life, then yes they can be real good cars.
Just don't buy something that has been neglected.
And remember that insurers can all change different prices for the same product.
Here's where I go to save time, input once, get a number of quotes:

This is another, input once, get a different set of carriers:

make sure you always ask for the same policy, same car, same everything or you'll be wasting your time.
all the best

the 318 is one of the best motors out there. Me personal i would pick the 318 over any other small block out there. my first car had a 318 in it and i went through 12 tires in a year. The only thing that i have replaced in the 7 years Ive owned it is the water pump, well i have to get a new rear in cuz i shredded mine. i also have a 318 in my stock car and i have had no problems whats so ever. 318 with 360 head and other mods. and i got my motor pushing about 500 hp just within the motor itself.

318 Engine

I am 58 years old and have been a car enthusiast since I was about 12 years old. Remembering that opinions are like noses, everyone has one and they all smell, here is mine.

Given the choice of three brand new engines, still in the crate, a 289 Ford would be my first choice, a 318 Dodge would come in a very very close second and the 283 Chevy a distant third. Personally, I wouldn't load a 350 Chevy in the truck for it.

There will be many people who don't agree with me but I think it a matter of opinion and there's mine. The 318 definitely ranks in the top group of Detroit iron. Although I don't place it first, I certainly wouldn't be afraid of one...

I run demolition derbies and would put my 318 up against any 350. Get a 318 hot and it's just fine, get a 350 hot and watch them puke out. I let my wife run a 69 Fury with a new style 318 in it and it got so hot you could hear the pistons squealing. 10 minutes later it was ready to fire up again, too bad she ripped the driveshaft out.

I worked at chevy for 12 years and had 318 powered dodges the whole time. Like said, with a routine of o/c's and minor maintanance, they are hard to beat.

We have a 1999 durango with a 5.2 sitting in it that has ran true since we got it... Only after my mother abusing it (going 6 years without oil change) now its rings are shot. Depresses me every time i think about it. Looking forward to swap out the 239 in my dakota for a 318. Gotta love the few gems that dodge perfects
