I'm sure how you're dressed has some impact on getting an upgrade, but usually upgrades are based on a combination of requirements. The passenger's status with the airline (each airline has a miles program) is the first requirement. A passenger's status is based on their number of flights and miles flown with the airline. Obviously, the more flights/miles (frequent flier) the higher the status and therefore a better Customer. Airlines like to bump up to first class their best Customers before the "once a year" traveler. Other requirements are the cost, grade etc. of the ticket which is usually considered on flights without many frequent flier's. The more expensive the better chance to get upgraded. Although, some airlines won't bump up a passenger even with an expensive ticket without an additional fee of like $75 (airlines have been hurting so they're trying to squeeze money everywhere they can). Now, as it relates to overbooked flights; usually if a flight is overbooked that means there are more people than seats and this includes first class. This is where "bumping" comes in to play. If booked on a flight that is "overbooked" usually the airline will look for people to give up their seats. When airlines do this they'll offer some sort of compensation. It's a combination of re-booking the passenger on the next flight, a free hotel if overnight stay is required, and finally some sort of ticket dollar amount. As an incentive for passengers to give up their seats airlines will offer various dollar amounts for a free ticket. Usually the airline will start with a low dollar amount and go higher if they can't get a sufficient number of people to give up their seats at first. SOMETIMES (not always) if you want to be bumped it can be better to wait to see how high the airline will go with the dollar amount of the free ticket. Ahhh, I'm probably getting off track. Anyway, hope it helps. FYI: Whether you fly first class or coach one should always dress well when traveling. Anymore a number of folks think the plane's their bedroom.

It's actually very rarely based on how you're dressed. The computer does the picking. After people with frequent flier status, they start with whoever is flying on the least restricted coach/economy fare classes (there's actually several classes within Coach). That's usually the ones that do not require a Saturday night stay, and that's NEVER a ticket bought from a reseller like Priceline or Expedia. Then they pick people who have flown with that airline a lot but have not hit frequent flier status. People with actual in-the-air-miles in their accounts have a higher priority than people with an equal number of miles that came from credit cards. You can always ask nicely-- it never hurts-- but with competition being as ferocious as it is these days, the airline is going to want to get a return on their investment. If they put you in First, they want to know you will be back, and the best way you can demonstrate this is by having a history of either paying higher rates for your tickets or doing a lot of business with them.

All airways, for the stunning few years, are growing extra restrictive in handing out free improvements. There does seem a hierarchy of activities that ought to take position previously you'll get an improve; a number of that you've administration over. a million) the category you're in, or the category lower than, should be overbooked and there should be availability contained in the subsequent classification up. 2) you ought to have a comparatively low priced cost ticket, ideally as on the breaking point of an finished fare as attainable truly than a heavily discounted cost ticket. 3) do not seem scruffy. 4) keep in mind that the examine in clerk is in all probability to be coping with passengers who ask a similar questions and supplies you her a similar crap known. It seems like some airlines are moving away from arbitrary decisions based on looks and giving out perks of this sort based on mileage status of frequent flyer members. I have been upgraded several times already, on occasion without the staff ever seeing me (which I know, because they call me up to the podium already ready to hand me the upgraded ticket), because I am in very good standing with my airline (I've flown over 50,000 miles this year).

If you´'re travelling within the USA, then the people who gets operational upgrades called "OP-UPs" are going to be the ones with high tiered airline frequent flyer programs.
Even if you join an airline program now, by having zero status, your chances for any operational upgrades will be close to nil. Dressing for the part isn't going to help much either.

If you buy a ticket at the last minute you can be bumbed up to first class because they know they have seats there but they won't advertise it. We did that on a flight to Mexico.

Wearing a sports jacket when you travel helps. If they have a choice between upgading a well-dressed gentleman and a guy who looks like a bum, guess who gets the upgrade. You don't need a tie, just a jacket, golf shirt and chinos will do.
