I tend to see the 4 elements in a more modern sense, preferring to look at them as the 4 states of matter, solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Spirit is the force that binds matter in one of these states or the principle that causes a certain substance like, solid water (ice) to retain the properties of water ,so that when it melts it reverts back to water and doesn't change into something else. (Just an example) So I guess that means I believe that everything in nature came from, exists in ,or becomes, one or more of the "5 elements" on a regular basis, which creates a universe that is both ever-changing and constantly the same.EDIT: Even when hydrogen and oxygen are separated, they retain the ability to form water ex. Hydrogen= hydro(water) +gen=genesis( origin).

Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit are metaphysical elements, and not what we are physically made of. It was once believed that these were the elements that made the physical world, but that is no longer the case.

The elements represent qualities that we posess, not the things we are made of. Wood can be said to contain Fire and Earth, because it is solid like the Earth, but can be set alight as Fire. That doesn't mean that it is composed physically of these elements.

As humans, we have aspects of all five elements, but we know that this is not what comprises our physical bodies. Paganism is not so non-sensical as to believe that the five elements are constructs on a purely physical plane. We recognize the multiple levels of existence proposed by many great thinkers, and recognize the application of the elements on more subtle planes.
