Sometimes I think that lack of understanding of the real concept of this word, is responsible for much of the misery in the world. Any ideas?

A person who practices humility is an unassuming thoughtful person who helps others unconditionally from pauper to the President and everyone in between. They are kindhearted charitable people, who don’t need to be recognized for their services or for their acts of kindness. They just sort a blend in, and take care of others without personal expectations of any kind. The world is a much better place when a person who practices humility is near.

Someone who practices humility is humble. They don't feel a need to be the center of attention or to point out why they are better then everyone else. Ways of practicing humility are to give to charity anonymously or doing other acts of kindness but not expecting any reward or acknowledgment. Being a good person is a reward in itself.

The real concept is to be humble. Someone who is modest. Do you mean lack of understanding or lack of practice? I'd say lack of compassion is what leads to most of the misery.

I don't think most people that talk about humility have even the remotest clue what the word means, much less are able to live up to the word.

You can practice humility mechanically, but it ultimately takes selflessness to practice true humility. And selflessness is ultimately achieved through self-realization.
