I think large is the width. Big includes both the width and the length. therefore big includes large but large does not include big!

Big is a masseur of scale, but Large is "exceeding most other things" of like kind especially (but not only) in quantity or size.

They are essentially the same, as they are synonyms, but they have different connotations. Large implies great length, whereas big implies great size overall, but the two are ultimately interchangeable.

large pertains to items that occur in a scale of sizes; big can be applied to any object that is above the norm in appearance

basically the same...but it depends on the context. If you are referring to a lady's size she will be offended regardless so don't use any of them!
