Ask a question that will (hopefully) lead your professor back to the topic, but don't tell the professor they are off-topic. It sounds... like you are trying to say that you know what's important more than they do. Also, you might try asking what you will be tested over (somtimes that leads them back, and sometimes it just makes you seem like a pedant). It might be worth the risk.
