Is it true that non-Arabic speaking Muslims have to chant the Quran in Arabic?

If so, this might explain why they don't seem to know very much about its contents. Some extraordinary claims have been made for it on this thread, e.g.
It's never been altered;
It promotes gender equality;
It advocates monogamy
It promotes non-violence

yes it is true that they recite the QURAN in Arabic, but they are also instrcuted to read Quran in their own language too, so that they understand it properly and not recite like parrot.

When something is supposed to be written, read and listened to in it's original form this keeps it from changing over time. That's why Koran is the same content every where. Thanks a lot for your question and comments.

Since Koran is in the most sophisticated Arabic language ever, even to the people who live in the Arabic Peninsula 14 centuries ago and they were known for being very articulate and very strong with the use of words and metaphors, that's why even Arabs now learn Koran. So Arab Muslims as well as non-Arabs need to learn it. Arabs get to learn the Arabic letters since they were young but they don't really speak the kind of Arabic used in Koran. It's in Standard Arabic which is not used in the day-to-day life because it's not that easy. Like when the British learn Shakespeare literature, sort of. Only Koran connects with science not clashes with it. It even foresees inventions and discoveries not contradicts with them.

People whose first language is English learn English, and those whose first language is Arabic also learn Arabic. You can't be good at a language unless you learn it. We are NOT born with language understanding genes! Also people speak in dialects not in languages. Koran is authored and written in a flawless Arabic language.

The Quran is meant to be for understanding and not show, so someone whom doesn't know Arabic to recite it in Arabic is vain and doesn't provide guidance. The Quran is not encaved by any language, it purifies the language it is translated in. The Word of God isn't in one lauguage, but a higher lauguage that affects the human conscious.

The Quran Must Be Translated

[26:198] If we revealed this to people who do not know Arabic.

[26:199] And had him recite it (in Arabic), they could not possibly believe in it.

[26:200] We thus render it (like a foreign language) in the hearts of the guilty.

[26:201] Thus, they cannot believe in it; not until they see the painful retribution.

[26:202] It will come to them suddenly, when they least expect it.

[26:203] They will then say, "Can we have a respite?"

[26:204] Did they not challenge our retribution?

[26:205] As you see, we allowed them to enjoy for years.

[26:206] Then the retribution came to them, just as promised.

[26:207] Their vast resources did not help them in the least.

[26:208] We never annihilate any community without sending warners.

Dear sir,

Arguing will be an utter waste of time for both of us (especially mine), even if you have all the time in the world, to prove what you want to prove is totally the opposite.
To prove my point in the web-site there is a highlighted part that says that Allah is unjust because he leaves those who are blind not by their eyes but by their hearts also (this is not a translation only the simple meaning of it) that is what you are!! Blind not eye blind but heart blind.

The answer for your question is really much simpler than you can even imagine, miraculously we have been told nearly 1400 years ago that people like you will come; thus we were told (not advised) to learn Arabic, so that we can read and understand what is written.

Therefore answering your question and to all those who want to read the Quran I advice that learn the language 1st then read such a divine book, otherwise please keep your silence. (when talking is of silver, silence is of gold)

When I was a correctional officer I had to supervise the Muslim services several times. Yes, they must read the Quran in Arabic, because it is not allowed to be translated. They must pray in Arabic, and understand all the meanings and such.

And as far as I could tell, women are considered property, but it teaches non-violence. I am a Christian, but I do not hate Muslims. I pray for them. I am also sorry that the world view of the Muslim faith is the "radical Islam" that we see on the news.

It is right to translate Quran to understand it...

But the translation is not only the common linguistic translation...
It needs the intrinsic meaning of the verses, and it called "Tafseer"..
Not every people can do Tafseer, only they who have reached the high knowledge in Islamic world can do it...

And of course we still use the Quran in the Arabic as the main book because of its originality...

yes people who dont speak arabic recite quran in arabic and when they do they also read traselation in their own language. quran is the most best and perfect and mistakeless book ever. and non can be compared to it. nothing can even come close to it. its the truth.
