A new 160G drive required loading Win98 to upgrade to winXP (home/pro don't know.) Requesting a boot disk, likely damaged partition/MBR, or lacking good BIOS. Boots every few tries.

A favor for a friend; I don't do upgrades for this reason. I'll likely wipe the disk, start from scratch. What's the pitfall for upgrading large disks to winXP using the upgrade version for win98 SE?

Or is there a faster way to fix this boot problem?

You and I don't do upgrades for just this reason. Get him to spring for a fresh install, not an upgrade. WinXP Home $90 at Tigerdirect, a reputable vendor.
