My doctor did not tell me all the tests they will be doing so I was wondering if anyone knew what was typically done so I know what to expect. Thanks!

You will have two pre-op visits before your surgery, actually. One will be with your regular doctor. During that visit, you will have a physical exam. The doctor will listen to your lungs, check your reflexes, and probe your abdomen. Your vitals will be taken, and you will also most likely have an EKG done. (They place electrodes on your chest and hook you up to a machine while you lie still--it doesn't take very long but you do have to wear a gown open in the front). They will also do some blood work--a CBC (complete blood count), and a few other tests. This visit is basically to establish that you are in generally good physical health, so that you are cleared for surgery.

During the pre-op physical, it is unlikely they are going to go over any information about your surgery with you. Based on my experience, the doctor who does your pre-op physical and your surgeon are two different people. So they people you are going to see tomorrow will not know anything about your surgery. They are just making sure you can HAVE surgery.

During your pre-op visit with the podiatrist, you will be placed in a room and the medical assistant will take your vitals. You will be given handouts with information about when and where your surgery is, what exactly the doctor will be doing to you, and what your formal diagnosis is. You will have several consent forms to sign. You will also get a handout with instructions on how to care for your foot after the surgery--when you can bathe, what to expect, etc. The doctor will come in, and he'll go over all the information with you about the procedure, and he'll answer any questions you have. Then you're done!

Good luck with your surgery.

They usually do basic lab work that checks for anemia, kidney and liver problems, infections, and clotting problems. They will probably do a pregnancy test just to make sure. You will probably get an xray of your chest too. Make sure you take all of your prescription bottles with you- it makes it so much easier to see what dose you are taking and everything. They will do a basic physical exam- listen to your heart and lungs, check your pulses, reflexes, cranial nerves... ask if you have had any problems... nothing too bad. Most of it will be paperwork- wanting to know everything about your health history- hospitalizations, previous health conditions, family history. If you have had any testing in the past year- call for those records to be sent to where you are going so that that doctor can see them too- this is especially good if you have had an echo or an EKG. Good luck with your surgery...

They will probably go through everything that you are going to have to do to prepare for your surgery too- what time you have to stop eating/drinking the night before, what medications you should not take, etc. Ask any questions that you have.

maybe to look over your foot- mark any spots they need to concentrate on. Check your vitals. Depends on the type of "simple foot surgery"

best thing would be to ask your doctor, but guess it would be like a medical examination where they check your urine, look at your height, weight, blood pressure... that sorta stuff
