I have 3 pair of finches in a very large cage on my screened in porch (florida) and today I noticed one of them has a fairly large sectionof feathers pecked off her back. Why is this happening? I have had them for two years and this has never happened.

Could be a mite infestation.

There are a couple of possibilities. Her mate could be plucking her as they mate or because he wants to mate.
Another female or male could be plucking her as she gets too close to where they are nesting.
If the cage is huge, try creating three separate areas that each have one set-up (nest, toys, swing, mirror, etc) so they'll all stay in their own areas.
Are they all the same type of finch? Zebras and Weavers don't mix with other types. They need to be kept separate, especially during breeding.

A male is probably plucking her, separate the female with another female.

They are probably bullying it so it is best if it is removed
