'Karuna' is the Sanskrit equivalent for compassion in English. There is a book by Dalai Lama on the subject which elaborately deals with the subject from the Buddhist angle.

KARUNA,METTA,MUDITA AND UPEKKHA is what we Buddhist called the Brahma-Vihara-Pharana(Four Divine Abiding).

Karuna=compassion
Metta=loving-kindnes
Mudita=sympathetic joy
Upekkha=equanimity
