My husband is in extreme pain, and his ortho prescribed Prednisone, advised against the Emergency room Saturday because they would give him pain meds that could disguise warning signs for worse injury. The prdnisone is not helping yet.

Why in the world would an orthopedic surgeon advise against going to an ER for emergency relief ? this sounds ridiculous to me. This is what he needs unless he's into some kind of religion or group that doesn't like medications, than he'll suffer of course.

What he needs for Pete's sake is a CAT's scan or a MRI of the cervical spine and see what's going on in there. I'd bet on a pinched nerve or a bulging disc. If you want to try and get by without surgery, months of treatments with a 90% failure go ahead, you might win. You can have surgery and be well within a few months.
A Neck brace, yes, don't listen to some, maybe one time in a million but I've never heard of serious damage from one and I've been in the business for many years.
Don't rub the spot it hurts in, you may irritate it or even make it worse. Use ice packs, this may give some relief for awhile.

A bulging disc can only be determined by x-ray or MRI.. if that condition is actually present, it indicates there is a considerable opposite tipping of the opposed vertebrae. Forcing that disc out into the vertebral canal which is the area of the nerve root itself. This indicating a reversal of the curve of the cervical spine, at that particular level. There has to be a reason for this to take place.. if those tests did not show degeneration of the vertebral bodies, we have to then conclude, there is some excessive muscular contracture to pull those bones out of their normal position.

Since this appears to be a structural problem, perhaps it would be advisable to extract a second opinion from a doctor of Chiropractic. This is something they deal with routinely. Treating the symptom will not take care of the problem. This is all that has been suggested to date.

I have to tell you do not let them put a neck collor on him, one of those two piece jobs that have the padding on them, they did that to me when I broke my neck and now I suffer from memory loss and seizures, it pinched off the blood and oxygen to my brain. I had an operation but suffer from nerve damage here is what I do

I have a bunch of those car horseshoe pillows, different ones help for different situations

I have a neck horseshoe thing that is filled with rice put it in the microwave and heat it up, creates moist heat for my neck relay works great

Hot water in the shower on my neck also helps

I hate meds but do keep flexeral on hand at all times for when I over due and cause bad spasms

At night I get my head comfortable with my pillows then I put a pillow up against my chest and under my chin to support my neck, now when I roll over I take it with me even in my sleep lol
Hope this helps I under stand having a pain in the neck!

Don't pick up heavy things, use correct posture, put cold on it for 15 minutes, take a medicine to help with the inflammation. Of course, if you haven't already, you should have a doctor look at it to make sure something isn't seriously wrong. There probably isn't and it's probably due to your job and how you sit, and the stress.

I have had what your husband is going through. I ruptured 2 discs in my neck and I found a good chriopacter and he massaged it and used other treatments on it and it feels much better.

There is no medicine for this problem. You will have to either go for surgery or follow acupuncture. I have treated many cases with acupuncture. To take painkillers is not the solution. It will increase the complications. So please search a skilled acupuncturist otherwise think visiting us.
