The presence of the Holy Spirit, there.
Elsewhere in the Bible incense represents other things; e.g. in Reveation incense represents the prayers of the saints coming up before God in a pleasing aroma.
Revelation 8:3-4 And another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand.

Actually, there was no incensne IN the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant contained three material items: Aaron's rod that budded, a pot of mannah, and the tables with the Ten Commandments. The Holy Spirit of God abode in the Ark.

A veil separated the Holy of Holies (where the ark was) from the Holy Place. Incense was burned on the altar of incense before the veil. It represented praise/worship.

Everything in the Holy Place represents our life in Christ---just as the priest would daily go into the Holy Place, fill the candlestick with oil and keep it buring, have fresh bread on the table of shewbread (that was eaten with meat from sacrifices), and burn incense on the altar of incense, the saint of God must daily keep himself in a holy place (sanctified; separated from worldliness and sin), keep the oil of the Holy Ghost burning (Jude 20 "praying in the Holy Ghost") through prayer, partake of the Word of God (while in a state of repentance), and offer up a sacrifice of praise/worship before God's throne.
