I have suffered from cold sores for years.
I have tried everything.
the only thing that will work is valtrex take two grams at the beginning of the cold sore and a repeat dose of two grams twelve hours later.

you can slow the progression with any thick cream like zinc oxide.

prevention is important any irrritant will bring them on such as sun wind cold heat fatigue.

so protecting the skin with a barrier like chap stick with a sunscreen in it will prevent them.

I have found that one dose of two grams of valtrex works for me so when I go to the desert I always carry some with me.

fingernail polish remover, rubbing alcohol, toothpaste (at night) campho phenique, cold medicine

ooh...so, I had a really bad cold sore a few months ago, and I was desperate to get rid of it, so I googled remedies for it, and believe it or not, fingernail polish remover seemed to be the remedy. There were also numerous reports that rubbing alcohol, toothpaste, campho and cold medicine were very good.
Lo and behold, I tried all of these, and the cold sore never got bigger and went away considerably at a faster pace. It was amazing. I really, really suggest you try these remedies. They have worked for a lot of people, including me.
They may sound shocking, but they really work!

Oh, and I was told not to use chapstick, because the cold sore will spread by way of the chapstick.

I have gotten a couple of those, my dermatologist gave me a prescription for Valtrex. If taken immediately after you feel one coming on, somehow it stops it from forming. I was grossed out at first too, since I thought it was only for genital herpes, but apparently it treats cold sores and shingles.

Go to Walmart ASAP and buy a tube of Abreva. It works for me. Every time you are about to get one, when you feel the "tingling" put it on and it never happens! It's about 10 dollars a tube but you only need a little and it's worth it!

My daughter using abreva, before that she would place some peroxide on it. abreva works quicker. She also uses any chapstick product with at least 15 sunblock, you have to use it everyday once or twice a day. That keeps it from occuring. She got that off of tv.
