I really need help with this one, since i'm allergic to penecillin and aspirin, i'm not sure if these malaria tablets contain these two things that i'm allergic to. I rang up and asked a nurse at a medical centre and she said u can take it. And i asked a pharmacist and she said u can't take it. So i'm confused. Can anyone help???

I am in Africa right now and I have been on doxycycline since starting this assignment 22 months ago. Mine are from a UK pharmacy and I can assure you they don't contain penicillin or aspirin.

The first issue i got of these was in Houston, and they were just doxycycline too. No aspirin or penicillin. I don't remember mine being called "hyclate" though.

Hope this helps- If you are in the States it's a wonder they didn't suggest you take Lariam, which is what most of my US colleagues are on?

If you are in any doubt, put your foot down and ask for lariam. You only need to take it weekly . And you won't have any allergy worries.

These tablets do not contain penicillin, and I would have thought it unlikely that they would contain asprin. If you are unsure I would recommend you ask your doctor as he will be the best source of knowledge regarding this matter.

Treating certain bacterial infections. It may be used in combination with other medicines to treat acne or certain amoeba infections. It may be used to prevent certain types of malaria in travelers who will be visiting malaria-infected areas for less than 4 months. It may also be used to prevent or slow the progression of anthrax after exposure.
Doxycycline hyclate is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by slowing the growth of bacteria. Slowing the bacteria's growth allows the body's immune system to destroy the bacteria.

Do NOT use doxycycline hyclate if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in doxycycline hyclate or to another tetracycline (eg, minocycline)
you are taking acitretin, isotretinoin, or a penicillin (eg, amoxicillin)
you have recently received or will be receiving a live oral typhoid vaccine
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

doxycycline contains......(Drum roll please)......doxycycline.
That's why it is called doxycycline.

No problem with your penicillin or aspirin allergies. I'm not sure why the pharmacist told you 'no'.
