Put simply the disciplines of Kung Fu are often aggressive (with some exceptions such as Tai Chi Chuan) and direct defense techniques and Aikido is a more passive and indirect defense techniques.

While each (the disciplines of Kung Fu, and Aikido) can incorporate throws, blocking techniques, strikes, and non aggressive resolution of confrontation; the disciplines of Kung Fu often emphasize the individual defending themselves by redirecting the opponent's strikes by blocks and countering with their own strikes in an equally aggressive manner.

Whereas Aikido uses the redirection of the blocking techniques in a more indirect and non agressive manner.

Kung Fu or "Chinese Boxing" is the COLLECTIVE NAME of the of Chinese Martial Arts that often refer to as many as 18 or more Martial Arts disciplines. each discipline has their own variences in basics, application, forms, and weapons training.

Meaning that they have their own unique training system with varying emphasis on each of those components but they do concern other aspects of training that are equally important but not explicitly included in many curriculums are philosophy and ethics. True Chinese martial arts training should provide an insight into an important aspect of Chinese attitudes and culture.

the many disciplines within Kung Fu usually contain a large arsenal of techniques and make use of the whole body, emphasizing efficiency (often through the ideal of economy of movement) and effectiveness in the execution of their techniques.

Aikido is ONE of the Disciplines of Budo (or Karate if you prefer) or the Japanese "Martial Way" (the collective name of Japanese and Okinawan fighting disciplines) which was derived and developed from Daito ryu aiki jujutsu by Morihei Ueshiba and is known for the spiritual and philosophical development of its students because of O-Sensei's (meaning great teacher; as he is still called by his students today) background in the Omoto kyo religion.

Aikido uses it's techniques to divert or immobilize rather than damage or kill. As a result, some consider the discipline to be a practical symbol of meeting aggression (physical, verbal, etc.) with an effective but merciful response, and finding harmony in conflict and as Ueshiba would later quote "To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace."

it redirects the opponent's energy or momentum against them (via use of grappling, joint locks/ manipulation, and throws) instead of using "strength to strength" as other Martial Arts disciplines do.

Aikido also follows along the lines of Bushido or "warrior code".

Akido is actually the hand-to-hand form of the samurai first developed during the feudal period in Japan. It was supposed to be used in the event that you ever lost your weapon. Akido focuses on joint locks and throwing using the attackers momentum against them. Akido also has a vast variety of disarming maneuvers.

Kung-Fu is actually an Americanized term used to describe a large group of ancient Chinese fighting systems. Just to give you an idea of what I mean I will list the types of kung-fu that I know of Bai-Fan, Hun Gar, Tiger, Leapord, Snake, Crane, Dragon, Elephant, Mantis, Monkey, Drunken Boxing, Long fist, Iron Body, and Heng Po. Each is unique but the main sumilarity that the styles share is some degree of focus on highly specialized strikes.

kung-fu is your basic self-defense like blocking with your hands/arms and legs/feet then counter attacking, but aikido is close combat defense and attacking/counter-attacking. both styles have different ways to learn but i find that if you take aikido with some kickboxing you can be very deadly.. like me. i have a 3rd degree black belt in aikido and 6 years of kickboxing. but if you want an example of aikido look at Steven Seagal.

Aikido is joint manipulation (I would refrain from saying grappling, as it gives effective images that Aikido doesnt deserve). very sucky sucky. try JuJutsu or BJJ if you are thinking about it.

Kung Fu is striking with hands and feet, although it has variations of these based upon animals forms and actions.

Aikidu is more weaponry, Kung Fu uses chin na, hand, kick and sometimes grappling (at least in my class)techniques. Both are very highly recommended martial arts.
