I am a graduate student with yet another project: I have to find out (from a practicing teacher) what the most common behavior is in a gen. ed classroom and provide 3 intervention strategies. Any suggestions?

1. Difficulty following directions
Strategies: repetition, use small steps, redirection with non-verbal cues (when directions are being given), recording directions in written format on board, and having students repeat directions back to you.

2. Acting out for peers' attention
Strategies: be proactive in giving the child attention and praise so this is not necessary, give said child jobs in the classroom, harness energy and direct it toward the task at hand.

3. Lack of participation/motivation
Strategies: be sure that your lesson plan has something in which the child can have an interest and make choices...it also helps to share relevence of the lesson with the children and boost their confidence to avoid this.

I hope this helps. :o)

When my son was in 6th grade, his school had peer mediators. If a student was caught lying, cheating, stealing or even trying to start a fight, they talk w/ the peer mediators to try and work thing s out. A Teacher is also present during the talks but they let the kids handle it. Only in extreme instances (i.e. threats) were the kids sent to the principal
