I mean seriously, wake up. Not all cops are good and not everyone that they villainize is bad. It's not like the game cops and robbers where there is a set good guy and bad guy. Some cops aren't necessarily good cops and not necessarily all the people that they hunt down are guilty, regardless of whether police ever actually admit it or not.

Drew- Does the word "profiling" mean anything to you :P
If Ted Bundy were only judged on his outward appearance he would have never been found guilty.

James, you don't need to be so defensive. I wasn't talking about YOU personally nor did I say that ALL cops are bad. You really should read questions more carefully before you answer them.

In today's age, most ppl who become cops need the power and control, not all but a very high number. These cops lack self esteem and get off on harassing ppl. Keep a journal every time you are harassed. When you have had enough, write a letter to the police chief and the Attorney General of your State.

Because most people never have to experience the results of being harassed by cops on power trips and believe that police are all there to protect and serve; why would you think otherwise unless you've had personal experience in the matter or have just watched too many episodes of "The Shield"? I agree with your comments, however, and will add that I bet the good cops will admit to being wrong, while the bad ones would never admit error.

Maybe it's because your avatar has a mohawk.
Response - I'm only making fun of you because I think I've been in your shoes. I agree that it's unfortunate that people judge on appearances, but that is the way the world is and it's not going to change. The bottom line is that if you stop looking and acting like a criminal, the cops will stop harassing you. Is it fair? No, probably not, but life isn't fair. Eventually you'll (hopefully) decide that there are better ways to spend your time than rebelling against "the man." If you want to fight injustice, maybe you should BECOME a cop.

You are right, some cops are not good. But I think you would find that most, the majority, are. Just like there's bad doctors, lawyers, mechanics, nurses, firefighters, carpenters, etc. The majority of them are all good and do their job well, but the few that don't, make the ones that do a good job just look bad. And you're right, I think you had a bad interaction with a police officer at some time and you are now saying that they are all jerks. Next time you need a cop, don't call one, he won't do a good job for you anyway.

I figure that people who berate cops are one of two kinds of people (or both). Either they have had a brush with the law, or they just don't like authority figures. I get a lot of attitude from teens every day. I'm not even a cop. I'm a teacher. I find it's easier and more pleasant to be respectful towards everyone. It's not up to me to determine who's good and who's bad and who to respect and who to disrespect. I'd rather be surprised by the bad eggs of the cop world, than to send them a welcoming committee saying, "We've been expecting you!"

It must be the area you live in. If there is a good amount of serious crime (homicides, burglaries, auto theft, etc.) going on in your area, I could possibly see more of a defensive attitude taken about negative comments about the police, but where I live, law enforcement's number one favorite thing to do is hunt down DUI's like they're hunting deer. They'll look for the least little thing to pull you over for, and then try to ruin your life for the next couple years. I don't advocate DUI, by no means, but when a driver isn't driving erratically, they're stopping them anyway if its late at night.

That is true. In every profession there are bad apples. It makes it really upsetting when it is a law enforcement officer. It is your right to disagree with law enforcement sometimes. Sometimes people are in the wrong place at the wrong time. But there is an avenue for those people to take action, legally. As for a brush with law enforcement for saying something negative. I would say it depends what is said. Certain situations dictate certain responses from people, when using your right to utilize your freedom of speech.

Let's see.... Because most people who talk bad about the cops have had a brush with the law. I speak half from personal experience and half from logic.
From personal experience - over 11 years in law enforcement as a patrol officer and detective - I know that the law abiding members of society generally never have ANY contact with the police, positive or negative. Most cities field approximately 1 officer per 10,000 citizens per day. Most of those citizens will never have anything to do with those officers beyond seeing them out on the roads. Most respect the police and believe they do the best job they can under the circumstances.
As to general logic, I think it goes along the lines of any other social group. Of course there are bad cops. But there are also bad doctors, bad priests, bad teachers, bad janitors, etc. The people who say negative things about these social groups tend to perceive themselves as "victims" of the group. People who run afoul of the law often consider themselves "victims" of the police and develop these negative feelings for them.

Perhaps because that is normally the case. I've had my "brushes" when I was young but I have never talked the police down. How would you like to live without them
DAMN! My question mark isn´t working again!

people figure that if you talk bad about the people protecting you you must be bad also. Cops are meant to protect but some over take authority.
