Ppl have all sorts of solutions for this thing. They squirt the cats with water and the cat starts to be afraid to come near the human because they might get sprayed. They put pepper under the tree and get the cat's nose all irritated and open up the nasal mucosa to infection. Then they end up at an emergency vet clinic with a cat with an upper respiratory infection on Christmas Eve. Some ppl buy spray stuff to put on the tree, but the smell will drive the ppl out of the room and the cat will ignore it. Some of that spray stuff smells like a wet dog. You have about a month to try a whole bunch of stuff that might not work. Those sprays can get pricey, and they have a whole bunch of different ones. Some ppl tell you to put orange and lemon slices on the floor around the tree, but if you live in a city, you better buy some roach traps too, cuz they love to eat anything. You can put stuff that tastes bad on the tree, but the cat will keep on climbing and it will drool out the bad tasting stuff about the time it hits the top of the tree.

You could use some wall hooks and tie the tree up so it doesn't fall. I don't think the cat is going to stay away from the tree until it is very old. You have to think like a cat. They like to play. They like to climb. Shiney things that dangle are good to swat. How do you make a cat act like it isn't a cat? When you figure that out, you will be a millionaire.

Think of it from the cat's point of view. Here is the very place your cat has gone for years in search of birds to hunt -- he/she has climbed trees and usually a tasty feathered friend is up there, like a surprise. So one day, someone brings this thing inside, this thing where the cat has found prey before. Hmmm .... all those balls and lights don't fool the cat -- she KNOWS prey might be there!

Just tie the tree to the wall and get out the camera. Don't worry about the climbing, just think about the laughter you will get from the idiocy of a cat climbing to find a bird. Enjoy!

I preach this every year. to help keep your cat safe (you can not watch her 100% of the time around your tree) take fishing line and wrap around the center of the tree and tack or nail it into the wall behind the tree. It will not be visable but it will keep the tree from toppling over and hurting the cat or the tree if she does climb up it.
I know this does not really answer your question but keeping kitty safe is important

I had this problem last year. I got an empty clean spray bottle and filled it with cold water...when our cat got near the tree I sprayed him. It took about 3 maybe 4 times of getting sprayed, but he stopped it. He wouldn't even try to play with a stray ornament that fell of the tree. Good Luck!

imagine of it from the cat's aspect of view. the following is the very position your cat has gone for years in seek for of birds to seek -- he/she has climbed timber and ordinarily a tasty feathered pal is up there, like a marvel. So finally, all human beings brings this aspect interior, this aspect in which the cat has positioned prey previously than. Hmmm .... each of those balls and lighting fixtures furniture do no longer fool the cat -- she is conscious prey possibly there! basically tie the tree to the wall and get out the digicam. do not worry about the rock hiking, basically believe about the laughter you receives from the idiocy of a cat rock hiking to detect a hen. savor!

Try Vick's vapor rub around the base of the tree or any thing else you can easily hide that you cat hates the smell of.
