I am looking at possibly getting a pomeranian for my 16th birthday. I am just wondering about the shedding. That seems to be the current problem with my parents. I have looked online and it seems that it is just depending on who you talk to. Some say that the dog sheds horribly, others say as long as you brush him once a week (which i am willing to do..) it isn't bad. So I was just wondering if an owner of a pom could give me some help. Do they shed all the time? Is it alot of hair? Do you have to vaccuum alot? I have a yorkie right now and he barely sheds at all. So this is kind of the dealbreaker.

They do not shed alot ,barely any especially if you brush occasionally I have had all kinds of dogs and believe me it is barely any.And the good thing is they have no odor and their hair is not oily like the Yorkie.I have had Yorkies as well and I did not like the oily smelly hair and ears.Pomeranians can live to be 25 yrs. old and they have the sweetest personalities and they are very very smart. They once long ago were used in the circus .They are truly amazing animals.I have a 16 yr old that still thinks that he is 2 yrs old he still runs and plays with the puppies.

As long as you brush the dog daily, you will capture most of the loose hair before it gets all over the place. I have a pomeranian and brush her daily, and I haven't had any issues with shedding.

Pom do shed. They are a double coated breed and the under coat does shed. They have outer hair called guard hair and the undercoat that is soft and downy and sheds especially in the spring/summer time.
To help with the shedding you will need to comb and bathe your dog frequently. Combing daily and bathing every other week or so with a good quality shampoo and conditioner will help with the shedding. Also feed a high quality food that is good for the skin and coat.
Your yorkies is part of the terrier group and terriers as a whole are non-shedding.
Frequent vaccuuming will help control the hair that sheds off.
I have neighbors that have poms. One of them keeps her dog full coated and combs and bathes her frequently to keep down the shedding and such. The other family has two poms and they shave them down a couple of times a year in what is known by groomers as a lion cut. Personally, I prefer the full coat as that is how they are suppose to look but whatever works.

My mom owned a pompom while I was young and the grooming took alot of time and when they shed their coat, its almost like a miniture golden retriever, they shed. You say you have a yorki, yorki hair is the closest to humans and are well known for not shedding, thats a great dog you already have.
Your parents should be concerned with the shedding because it can be extensive at times, if you want to reduce the shedding I would advise brushing EVERYDAY not weekly. They have alot of hair!!

You allowed a FIVE YEAR OLD dog to have puppies!!! Are you insane! No small breed should have pups at that age. God, I hope your female (and the male) had the appropriate health certs and were Champions or from Ch lines before you bred her. If not then you could very well have a problem that needs more than a "look" by a vet. It could be a skin condition, lack of natural oils, mange, other parasites, internal parasites that could affect the dog, or another hereditary problem. Go to another vet and get her spayed asap!

my mom raised poms for many years-- yes they do shed quite a bit but that goes with any long haired dog-- poms need to be brushed and taken care of as their hair gets matted up easily-- but these critters are brave and will attack a bigger dog not knowing that their size matters-- also poms bones break real easily and a accident can have fatal effects as these dogs are dainty and small-- they are great companions -- dont eat much-- and provide years of satisfaction to their owner-- be prepared to spend a little more time grooming these dogs then with others
