Go through rescue. Any GSD puppy you can find for under $500 is almost certainly a backyard breeder and I promise you that the money you save on purchase price will go right back in to pay for hip displasia or other health problems.
Go to Google and type in "German Shepherd rescue" + your state

Try the German Shepherd rescue they have lots of dogs and sometimes pups and young dogs are available. Adoption fees vary but it will cost $200. to $350 depending on location and the fee usually covers shots and the spay/neuter. Search German Shepherd rescue and add your location. Do not buy from petfinder.com, newspaper ads, or pet stores, You will only get pups from BYB and puppy mills from these places and a lot of these pups have poor temperments and are sickly. If you are set on a pup a good place to look for Shepherd breeders would be the Parent club they can refer you to Shepherd clubs in your area and through the clubs in your area you should be able to find an ethical breeder.

Shelters frequently get German Shepard dogs. You can get a wonderful one at almost any shelter. Have you looked on the web? Or just go to the local one where you live. Also they may be able to tell you of a German Shepard rescue place. Please don't buy a dog and encourage breeders to breed more when there are wonderful dogs available to adopt. Also you will save a life and the dog will be eternally grateful to you for providing a good home.

Try your local animal shelter! I got my German Shepherd mix t here and she was already spayed, had her shots and I only paid $90.
A friend got a dog elsewhere, paid a lot more, had to pay to get the dog fixed and she got a psycho dog while mine's sweet tempered.
If you check and the shelter doesn't have a German Shepherd right now, ask if they keep a "wish list." Our local shelter does, they call you if the breed you want comes in.
