What's the difference between curly maple and flamed maple?

realistically there is no differance, its all in the way that it is sawn or cut at the mill, you wont find out untill the wood is opened up, patterns are completely random, no preference for either one

I think what you meant was birds eye maple which has a lot of curls. Very nice looking.
