I read about those of you who berate Michael Richards and Mel Gibson for their racist comments. Then there are those of who tear up anyone who is even remotely against the homosexual life style, calling them homophobias etc. You can come to the aid of all sorts of different religions at a time when Christ's birth is celebrated. I find tolerance of everyone else's beliefs, no matter what that might be, and while the majority of the citizens of the United States claims Christianity as their chosen religion it is the most abused religion, group of people (along with the Jews) to walk the earth. Why is this?

Examples?...Look on this site and you see Christian bashing on all sides. Yet when it comes to anyone else, tolerance is preached. Why?

It's a shame, but maybe I can help you understand it. The groups in the US who are in the majority- cover your eyes, gentle soul, but white, heterosexual, Christian- okay that's enough- can be a bit prideful when it comes to people who don't fit with the majority. When the majority people belittle the minority people, there's a tendency for ALL the different minority groups to band together and root for the underdog. The majority group starts to be seen as oppressive, maybe even if they really aren't.
I think that you can help yourself locally with a "live and let live" policy toward other religious groups. In other words, invest in accepting others and you can expect their acceptance in return. It's the old "do unto others" trick, but it is a good principal.

You know, anyone who is against a homosexual lifestyle, simply does not practice it. Michael Ricahards and Mel have chosen to be in the public eye and so anything and everything they do or say is subject to public scrutiny.

I agree, tolerance of everyone's beliefs is the only way to go - particularly at this point in history when unity and tolerance are more important than ever.

If you are truly looking for an answer of why people think it is ok to insult christians you might as well as why is it ok to insult white american males. The largest group is often the largest target - it's the one thing all the minorities can agree on is hating the majority for the discrimination it receives.

Peace!

History class - Christians make great slaves. Jews love them. Muslims love them. They work like dogs, are loyal, and always take care of others. I'm just reading from the book, so don't start calling me names too. :)

I think it's a part of the 'first shall be last' philosophy. It's also about accepting a level a guilt, and constantly working towards being a better person. So, If you say bad things about a group that is helping people, what does this say about you?

In another case, Christians are the majority religious organization in the word. If that huge power turned it's head and focused on a target, very bad things could happen under the wrong power. This is possible tyranical behavior by any organization that is on top, therefore it must take a more modest posture, leaving it vulnerable to attack. Some 'quick to change' religious organizations disassociated them with any hirearchy, so people can't sue them and go after the big bucks. Fortunately the Church is better known for other behaivors like abolishing slavery in the Spanish New Colonies in South America, before North America thought of it, freeing the Russians, saving Jews, etc.

For some reason the Orthodox Catholics hate the normal Catholics. And, I think there's some Christians killing each other over whether or not you can put a condom on. I don't full understand these yet. It is very difficult to talk to people about religion, because they get supppppppppppper cranky. i.e., Muslims wack your head off. Not good. I once asked a Bible manufacturer what he really did in his spare time, and he won't talk to me anymore either.

I think it is very unfortunate we have casualties in the communication of ideas. (I didn't say weird stuff! Just normal stuff...)

If you really want to see what persecution is like try following an "alternative" belief in the Bible belt. And being open about it. I've been lucky, I haven't had any problems. Others haven't been so fortunate.

Many people have lost jobs because of their religion. People have lost custody of their children just because of their faith. People have been beat up, had their lives threatened and their pets murdered. There was a judge in Indiana last year that told a divorcing couple that they couldn't raise their son in their faith. Two years ago, a 13 year old girl named Tempest Smith was bullied and ridiculed so badly that she committed suicide. They were all Wiccan.

Christianity may be abused in Lebanon, or Afghanistan, but not here in the U.S. Here, it still holds a place of high privilege. Losing that privilege and being put on the same level as everyone else isn't abuse or persecution, it's equalization and it should have been that way from the beginning.

Can you give some specific examples of this?

== I see bashing of all religions and beliefs. I don't see any more going toward Christians than I do toward Muslims, or any others. I thought perhaps you had examples of this outside Yahoo-Answers. Where I live, Christianity is about the only religion practiced (there are also some Jehovah's Witnesses here), and the Christians are hardly abused.

Let's clear something up here. . .not all Christians are intolerant. Many are loving, giving, caring people who wholeheartedly live up to the examples of mercy and compassion set by Jesus. They don't condemn others because they know that they've done wrong, too. They share what they have with the poor and needy, and they go out of their way to make the world a better place for all.

These are the real Christians -- not the self-righteous who condemn others for doing wrong while they themselves are just as guilty. A hypocrite is NOT living by the example of the Lord to Whom he claims allegiance.

But the hypocrites and the self-righteous are the ones who get the media coverage -- not the unknown nun who's up all night caring for a dying person in a hospice or the guy that goes without lunches and dinners in order to help an elderly neighbor pay the utility bills.

"By their fruits, you will know them." The bad apples have given the genuine Christians a bad name, and that's why there's so much bashing going on.

I said it once, I'll say it again: Familiarity Breeds Contempt.

Hey, don't worry, I think all the other religions are just as backwards, archaic and mind-numbingly illogical as I do yours. The only difference is I'm not surrounded by them every single day of my life the way I'm surrounded by Christians.

And for such an abused religion, you sure do have it well. You're also the SAFEST, the RICHEST, and have the longest lifespans. Cry me a river. Besides, it sure seems like you guys get off on "being persecuted". How many times have I heard Christians spouting off about how they'd be willing to die for their beliefs? Too many times.

Hmm. I really don't believe Christian-bashing has gotten out of hand any more than, say, bashing Islam. If others insult you, take the higher ground. Intolerance is rampant, don't let it strike you. There are tolerant Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, Secular Humanists, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. all over this site. "What you seek you shall find." Good luck.

Oh please, Christians take a back seat to Muslims in this country when it comes to abuse. White Christians weren't detained in airports after Timothy McVeigh and his Christian brothers blew up the Murrow building in Oklahoma city.

White Christians scholars weren't removed from a plane for which they had legitimate tickets because they made another passenger "uncomfortable."

Most of the Christians who draw fire here do so because they are acting in bigoted or hypocritical ways. They make fact less claims and expect others not to call them on their lack of facts as they claim to present "the truth."

I don't believe in the oppression of anyone on the basis of their religion. However, participating in a public forum does make your viewpoint subject to reaction and debate. If all you want is a pat on the back and to be told that what you believe is right, no matter how unsubstantiated or skewed your view might be, then this is not the place for you.
