wow great insight, .. however its flawed, so a hunter actually killed the animal, not the store, they just created the demand for the dead animal, big difference!!! Like me paying someone to kill someone, well hell why you mad at me, i didn't kill that person??? .... that's your logic, good job buddy!!

Bound here:

If you'll notice, there are signs that accompany each and every mount (preserved animal). Each of those signs will tell you the species, gender, region, whether they were common or uncommon examples of their species.

Those little signs also hold one more piece of information that you might want to take notice of... the cause of death.

Now, I can't speak for the exotic game, but every animal that my husband, myself and our 11 month old daughter make time to see when we visit Cabela's was either taken by a hunter or found (died of natural causes). NONE of those little signs say, "this animal was slaughtered so that the hide could be stuffed for your enjoyment"!

My family visits Cabela's as often as we can... no small feat since it's a three hour drive each way. We enjoy many things about the store (more than I could list seeing as my husband is the book writer in these parts!). We always make time to see the wildlife displays that interest us. Our daughter has a wonderful time looking at all the animals and hearing Daddy tell stories about them. This is, actually, one of the ways that we are using to impart our values on our daughter. We are trying to teach her from this young age to respect the animals that adorn our table and that she will, eventually, have a chance to hunt herself.

If you don't like it, well, sir, you are free to keep your liberal tush out of our favorite store.

I do want to thank you for one thing, though... this question led me to take a look at Cabela's website. Come to find out that Santa visits Cabela's, too! Thank you for bring this up... this means another trip to Cabela's for our brood!

Don't worry, as we view the displays we'll be certain to remember the shallow people that have little regard for nature and the lessons she can teach us.

Now, Bound's hubby here:

As a child when I was taught about hunting I was also told to honor the game that I've killed. Not a single animal that I have taken has laid in waste just so the hide and the head could be mounted. I think you will also find that most of the game that you took offense to has not only been shot but also consumed to feed families. It is possible to eat the meat and preserve the hides.

Now, do you take as much offense when you walk through your local grocery store and pass by the meat counter?

Do you reflect upon the thousands of cattle that are fed steroids and electrocuted so you could have a degree of satisfaction when you eat knowing that the blood is not on your hands?

Do you take offense when you walk past a shoe store or a leather goods store and mourn the animals that were killed to meet your shallow needs?

At least my family knows that the meat they eat came from an animal, not a styrofoam tray. This is America, where everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how offensive others may see it. The nice thing is when you know there is something offensive to you, you are not forced to view it. You did not have to enter Cabela's ... you entered it by choice ... you were not forced in!

The next time you have the opportunity to go to Cabela's ... remember the experience you disliked ... and not go in! Make space for someone that can appreciate "natural art"!
