I loose some power going up hills, it is jerky or hesitant in some gears, and there is a ticking sound that wasn't there before. Some days are better than others it seems to depend on the cold weather. Really cold weather and not warming it up properly seem to agitate it more. After research I found someone with the exact same problem and they were talking about distributors. What is that and what does it do anyone? Please help.

The distributor does just that, distributes. It send a spark at the right time to the right cylinders to combust. It DOES sound like it's either the distributor or spark plugs/wires. I had a "ticking" sound before and it was from the spark "jumping" out of the wire and making contact on metal. While it's not dangerous (assuming there are no fuel leaks anywhere) it is annoying. It sounds like when you are going up hills or in certain gears that the car is not operating on all cylinders, making it kinda cough and struggle to get moving. Start the car and look under the hood to look for sparks. If you see or hear the sparks (from the wires) then you may just need to replace ($20) but if it's not that it may be something more serious like a bad piston (expensive). If the noise sounds like a static shock like when you touch a doorknob, just a "spark" problem, but if it sounds like an old beat up truck (imagine the cartoons) then it may be a "knock" in the piston. Good luck!

Not knowing the year of your vehicle and engine size makes it difficult. Some vehicles don't have distributors so it's difficult for some to talk about it. If you have a a 96 or newer it has sensors that act up at times so don't jump to any conclusions.

check your oil level..if you find that oil is burning it usually means your engines not getting it, so you lose power...if your losing oil its probably your compression rings..get it checked out fast if thats the case..same thing happened to me
