Brooklyn is a Burrough, like a District.
There is Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Queens, five burroughs in all.
The only burrough that is on the "mainland" is the Bronx.
All the other burroughs are on Islands.

Staten Island is across the river from Brooklyn.
