escape shouldn't be as big of a concern, strangulation should be. Any cage that a bird can squeeze his head through the bars and then get stuck is an accident waiting to happen. Cover your cage with true metal/wire screen material, the same stuff used on your windows but it's metal not fiberglass. Fullgrown, 3/4inch to 1inch should be okay, just measure from one side of his head to the other, the narrowest part, if it's 1/2 inch bigger than the bars your good to go.

It's a bit wide. The bird may escape if really young. I used some chicken wire around the cage until my bird couldn't squeeze through (around 6 months of age).Good luck.
