With an increasing number of people less religious, more into looking good, having multiple lifetime sexual partners, more likely to live in dysfunctional families, more likely to see porn and sexual ads on the internet at a young age etc....

do you think depression now affects a majority of people on a regular basis? I know so many people taking Paxil etc.... that I wonder if society needs to turn back or if it is already too late?

I don't know that it has increased but people are realizing it's more of a problem. My parents suffer from mental illness but still to this day they will not for all the money in the world admit they have problems..I think generations my age and younger are realizing that it's ok to admit there is a problem and it's ok to get help. That it doesn't mean you are weak. It's also more in the media than it use to be about the symptoms of depression and the treatment..it's helping people become more aware that it's not just "I am having a bad week".

Turn back? Turn back to what? That's just why everyone is so damned depressed. Everyone wants to turn back the hands of time to an era of repression. People think a magic pill will make them better. All people need, is to open their eyes & go back to the basics. Depression is just more noticable in a world with mass media & hype. We are currently in a time of transistion & this is uncomfortable because we aren't quite into the electronic age in a way that is utilized by everyone & we are no longer in the past when we had to do everything by hand & check & re-check. Perhaps in another 20 years, the US will have ironed out the "kinks" in the new electronic age that is called the future. Until then, we just have to have patience with one another!

While we can never go back to how things "used to be" I do think that societal pressure on our children needs to change. Our children are heavier than ever while pressure to be skinnier than ever is everywhere is evident in everywhere from MTV, magazines, etc. Our children need to be taught how to live a HEALTHY life which does not include all the soda, white bread, and SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR. No wonder so many children are obese with the types of food targeted toward them.

Due to the ever growing size and decreasing health of our children , I do feel we will see a large increase in depression and other mental and physical disorders as a result.

The solution? Education! Education all parents and children on how to live healthy lives before its too late!

I don't necessarily think depression has increased if you looked at the number of cases per population. The increase in cases has to do with population growth and more acceptance of depression. In the past it was not something openly spoken about.
