What is a humane and kind way to train a Burmese Mtn Dog, (about one year old) to stop grabbing people by the arm and feet when they are moving?

Correction: Bernese Mountain Dog.
He actually jumps up and graps arms. Has left marks and drawn blood. He has gotten a way with this for too long and it has become a bad habit. I'm thinking of recommending a muzzle while reconditioning his thinking about grabbing flesh. This is all done in play. Not aggressive, but certainly an undesirable behavior.

Wow, it seems like I owe most of my recent points to biting/nipping questions, and the answer is always the same...

Gently enough for you don't hamper breathing, but firmly enough that pup understands it is correction, hold the muzzle shut and give him/her a firm "NO BITE". Don't let pup pull away... you let go when you're ready to.

Be the Alpha.

UPDATE: Take a short leash and leave it on the dog. It should not drag on the ground. When the dog attempts to jump up grab the leash and gently pop it, but firmly enough the dog feels a bit of a jerk. Then say OFF in a clear firm voice. When bitting come up with a comand like No Bite and pop the leash once again Firm enough the dog feels a jerk but not so hard it hurts your dog. You want to grab his attention not hurt him. Hope this helps.

Honestly I dislike the correction method of the first poster. Grabbing the Mussel will make it more aggressive. If the dog is playing and this is not an aggressive move reach out and pet the dog and ignore the nipping. Its much like a child. Negative attention is attention. So you do not want to ignore the dog but ignore its behavior. If with guest, when nipping call the dog to you and pet it. If the dog insist on nipping firmly say 'NO' then pet the dog. If its just doing it and not in an aggressive way its trying to get attention. And you want to teach the dog it dosent get your attention that way, and teach it the right way. With out making it mean and being mean towards it. If it is an aggressive move try spatting it with a rolled up newspaper. This will not hurt your dog but startle it enough to get its attention. Then firmly say 'NO'. Keep in mind this is something you will have to work on and will not happen over night. Good luck.
