We had to put my older dog down the other day, and since then my younger dog has not been herself. She won't come out of her crate, even for toys or treats. She comes out to eat and go potty then goes back in. I realize they need to grieve, but I feel awful. Is there anything I can do to cheer her up?

That happened before with me...our other dog got really sad after we had to put the older dog asleep. Be sure to play with your dog and take her on walks. Maybe slip in an extra treat every now and then.

If you're sad try to feel happy. Dogs can sense when your feeling sad. If you don't mind maybe she can sleep on your bed or in your bedroom with you just for some company.

Just like humans dog grieve. Give her lots of TLC, and read her this poem.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Not that this will do any good now, but when I had to put my older dog down, my vet suggested that I bring the younger dog along. After the older dog had been put down, we brought the younger dog in and let him see that she was dead. He could tell she was dead, he understood; and it helped him deal with her absence. Dogs don't know where their friend went, it helps when they do. In your case, hang in there, she will get over it in time.

Show her a
lot of attention. You might even think about getting another dog. If you are gone all day you know that dogs have feelings also.

Give her lots of extra love and time, she misses her friend.Perhaps you have something left with your other dog's scent on it to put by her? Though I don't know if that would make it worse.
