are budgies good pets?

I think they're good pets. I have seven.
Some of them can talk. Mine can't.

The price varies. I got 3 free because they were abandoned at Petco. I got one for $9 from a breeder. I adopted two from the humane society for $10 apiece. I bought the rest at Petco, where it cost about $15 - $20.

When you first get a budgie you'll need to go to the vet, and that can run $50 or more, depending on where you are and who you see.

You'll need to make sure you have a proper cage setup. You probably can't buy a decent cage for less than $50. You'll need plenty of toys to go in it. A budgie can get bored very easily. You'll need a variety of perches and cuttlebone or mineral block as well.

I really don't remember how much it costs to feed one budgie. Right now I buy Roudybush in 10 lb bags (about $25) with the occasional nutriberries. (about $7) They eat the same fruits and veggies I do.

Budgies themselves smell nice, very downy. But they poop, and that can smell if you don't clean up after them properly. You need to make sure you change the paper and clean the cage regularly.

I think budgies make wonderful pets! I have three and I just love spending all the time I can in the room they live in!

They can learn to talk, but mostly when you only get one and you have to spend a lot of time with them. But they can learn to talk very well, although their voices are a little hard to understand!

They're relatively cheep to buy in comparison to other birds but this does not mean they are a cheap bird all up. In Australia they cost about $16 for an aviary raised bird and up to $100 for a hand raised one. I'd advise you getting a hand raised one first off, especially if this is your first bird as it makes the taming process much easier.

Budgies do have a certain smell, but I wouldn't say they smelt bad. If you don't clean their cage it can develop a smell, but the budgies themselves do not smell.

Don't consider getting a budgie until you have done a lot of research. They take a lot of care. These are just a few of the basic things you have to do and there are many many more.

Clean their cage everyday.

Change their food and water ever day.

feed them a variety of fruit, veggies and other foods everyday.

Allow them to have at least 2 hours free flying time out of their cage everyday.

Give it proper vet care and find it an avian vet, because normal vets don't really know how to treat birds.

Spend time with them everyday, especially if you only get one budgie. If you only get one you will be looking at spending upwards of 4 hours a day with it at least!


This is just the basic stuff! Please look into it a lot before you get one and if you think you wouldn't be able to fulfill these obligations please don't get one.

Budgies are great pets. I've had three of them. They can learn to speak, but it is very hard to get them to do it. I was never able to teach them to speak, but I did teach them different whistles that they would use on command. They can also be taught finger tricks like jumping and hanging upside down.

The smell like regular birds, and only will get smelling if you don't change their food and water and clean their cage.

You can get a good budgie at PetsMart for under $30. Mine were $20, though I bought my first one 10 years ago.

They are great pets!!!

Yes they can learn to talk if you talk to them alot the males talk better then the femals tho.

I got my newest one for 10 dollars you can get them from like 10-30 dollars, it matters where you go.

None of mine have ever had a smell, but they love to take baths and I clean the cage all the time.

they can learn to talk but it takes a lot of work and patience. they are hardly ever quiet and while they are not too loud, the constant chirping can be annoying. i adopted mine(free) but you can find them from a breeder for about $10 or a pet store for about$20. they don't smell at all!!! i change their bedding,food and water daily though but i doubt they would stink if you miss a bedding change or two. i have 4, and other than the noise and seed mess, i think they are great.

We have had several budgies. They make fantastic pets. They can be tamed to talk and sit on your shoulder.Budgies cost less than canaries.So long as you clean out their cages once a week they should not smell.Email me if you have any further questions.

They can learn to talk. It takes forever to teach them though. We charge 24.99 - 29.99 for them at the pet store I work at. They smell a little, if you don't clean up after them. But it just smells like seeds. Not a horrible smell.

it doesn't smell bad at all. the males can learn to talk. they are about $20. long tail $80. get a blue one. and name it male: Feaxera Female: Feavera. my budgie bites real hard though. and they hate patting so don't ever pat it. get it as a baby so easier to tame.
