How am I supposed to know if I can change my ring yet? it's been 3 weeeks and I intended to change it in about a week. Does it matter if it's red near the top and bottom hole? How can I tell if it's ready or can be changed? I REALLY can't wait to change it!! I'm so exited, but I don't want to end up with an infection. Help?

Thanks =)

You need to wait to change it. The reason the top hole is red is either a result of poor cleaning, irritation, infection or migration. You need to keep it clean and wait until the redness goes away. If the redness spreads, you notice bright yellow/green pus or soreness, then you probably have the start of an infection and will need to get antibiotics. For now, I suggest using more sea salt soaks and wash it daily with liquid Dial and warm water.

When its ready to be changed, there will be no redness near either hole, no puss or build-up, no soreness in the area of the piercing and it should be at least 4 months old. However, if after 4 months, its still red, wait longer. To be on the safe side especially in your case, I would wait 6 months or more.

I understand the desire to want to change it, but for the piercing and ensuring it heals correctly, wait.

You need to wait 6 weeks other wise there is chance of infection. And if its red, that could be a sign of there already being an infection. I have 5 body peircings, wanted to change the ring in my nose to a stud but it was to soon, aka got infected. So just wait, you dont want to have to deal with an infected belly button ring.

You need to wait atleast six weeks because if not, you could get an infection. The piercing place uses special belly button rings that are not prone to infection and are easy to clean and keep clean. Also, your belly button is not even close to being healed. It will be hard to get the new belly ring in because your skin will kind of stick to it because its like and open wound and the belly button hole hasnt had time to loosen up yet!

I have no experience with that particular type of piercing, but if its red then you know it isn't completely ok. If its redder than it had been before there's a chance you're already getting an infection.

Skin/tissue that is completely healed and completely fine is never red.

Keep an eye on. Keep it super-clean. Maybe what you need to be asking is whether it should still be red three weeks after having it done. Consider calling a doctor's office and just asking that.

its too soon to change. you will need to go to the piercer and have them change it for yo. they can sterilize tyour bewelry and will be able to get it through smoothly. soing it yourself can result in an infection or you may not be able to get ti back in. so go backj to where you got it doen or a shop near by and have them to dit for you. it is too soon to change it though,. navel rings cabn take up to a year to fully heal you should have picked otu a piece of jewelry t hat you would have ben happty with for 3 months. thats when it shoudl be changed....... not only an infection you need to wrry about but damaging the piercing even more taking it longer to heal too....

but its normal to be red liek that. ine was red around the hole on the top for a while after a few weeks. mine is 5 months old nad is still healing since the jewelry is still getting crusty but go get it changed by the pros since the piercing is so new the hole could close up on you quickly

I changed my belly button ring after 4 weeks. It was red still, but it didn't get infected after I changed it. It hurt a little, but it was completely fine afterwards. Just make sure that you keep taking care of it really well and cleaning it often. Mine didn't fully heal for a few months.

I agree with brandy. Wait at least 6 months. If it is getting red sounds like to me its starting to get infected. Are you cleaning it with dial antibacterial liquid soap once a day? If not start today because when it gets infected its not fun at all trust me because mine got infected and it is very painful. And another thing you may want to get some neasporin and put around it at least once a day. Hope this helps.

OK well if its still red i would wait til he redness went away before changing it. if u can move ur belly ring up and down and turn it side to side with out pain. once I could do that and had let enough time go by i changed mine. so if i were u i would wait till the redness went away but that's just me.

better safe than sorry. I couldn't change my ear piercings for... 6 weeks, i think. maybe belly button piercings are different, but I'd say give it another week or two. If you're really really desperate, disinfect the new ring (like disinfect to the EXTREME), and then quickly change the rings, thoroughly cleansing the piercing before you change it. Switch back to your original as soon as possible, making sure to disinfect everythign again.
