The best example to use is the pancreas. The islets of Langerhans are the endocrine part of the pancreas that produces hormones (insulin, glucagon) that are circulated around the body to have their effects far away. The exocrine pancreas is the bulk of the organ and produces amylase and lipase, that has the effect of helping to digest the food, and is carried to interact directly with the food via the pancreatic and common ducts, to enter the small intestine through the sphincter of Oddi in the proximal duodenum.

In general an exocrine gland is a gland where the glandular product is produced outside the gland, as it is carried away through a duct. An example would be a salivary gland, the saliva is produced in the gland, and it goes through a duct into your mouth. An endocrine gland is where the product of the gland a hormone is secreted directly into the blood stream, there is no duct. An example would be the thyroid gland. The pancreas, and the ovaries, and the testes are both an endocrine and exocrine gland in one.
