is a vine starts out red in color gets greener with maturity, has three leaves, has a sheen to it because of the oils in it. Contact to an allergic person may cause a reaction resulting in a red rash that might resemble a bad rug burn. Blisters may or may not be present depending on the person and the severity of exposure. IT IS CONTAGIOUS, scratching breaks the blister and the puss will run causing other areas to be infected as well. If you have it and rub against someone and your soar is broken they can be infected as well, that's why it is best to put lotion (calamine or other lotions or gels specifically designed for poisonous plants or bee stings) on it to dry it out and cover it up and don't scratch, if a large area is covered in blisters then you can take an oatmeal bath to alleviate the pain and itching. if it is ingested or is burned on wood and is inhaled it can inflame the esophagus possibly causing asphyxiation if not treated. best thing to do is if you think you might have come into contact with any poisonous plant be it ivy, oak or sumac, is to immediately wash the area with hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly.

If you come in contact with poison ivy, characterized by reddish stems and green leaves in clusters of 3, you should wash your skin and clothing with dishwashing liquid, because of the oils that will cause a reaction in sensitive individuals. If you have a dog that goes outside and gets into poison ivy, you can be repeatedly exposed to it until you wash the dog with an oil-removing soap.

Will not spread if you scratch it. Hydrocortizone cream will help the itching but won't make it go away. It will go away in two weeks.
