I just recently bought an M4 Carbine that I plan to use for deer hunting. What kind of silencer works best for deer?

I like it because its semi-automatic and its an assault rifle, already bought the thermal scope and bipod for it, I plan on adding UV scope and light to it to light up the deer. But need something else to give me an edge over the other hunters.

I chose this one due to price and reliability, it was a toss up between the M4 or an MP-5SD5

I would not, repeat, not use the .223/5.56mm for Deer hunting, it can be done and has been done, but there are other reasons. In alot of states it is illegal there is a minimum caliber to use on deer, in some states it is; but is it humane?

The reason why I do not recommend it is because I have seen alot of deer run with vital hits from a .243 which has more energy. The .243 is a great cartridge and my nephew from Colorado uses it on deer all the time and his son just got one with it. It is a great beginners rifle and a flat trajectory with less recoil than the higher power .30 rifles, but you have to hit them good like any caliber but more so and worry more about the wind too. (Deer do run with higher power vital hits too like the .30s and they do drop dead with the .243, I suppose it is question of ethics at least.)

I am hesitant about the .22s and deer hunting although I have seen lots of articles on it in the magazines, but the .243 offers you everything the .223 does, for the most part other than recoil.

It will also allow you to buy a true hunting rifle which will give you more range and be as cheap or less than some m4s.

The m4 carbine isn't the best deer rifle, first off its a carbine so it isn't that accurate unless you do some stuff to accurize it, whether you do or not you will be shooting 100-200 yards preferably less. Probably should anyway with the cartridge. The m4 loses alot of velocity that the m16 rifle retains. Some regard it even as a pdw weapon as the .223 is only good for stopping weaker than deer humans at certain velocities. (I know I will catch fire for that o well) It has a certain velocity to remain effective otherwise the velocity or shockwave doesn't help it and the bullet won't fragment. Thus making it inferior to other higher caliber rifles at least in humans which are technically easier than deer which run in the wild and are more fit and strong.

But that is not the reason of it not being a good deer rifle, it is because most states won't allow you to use the 30 round magazines so you will need a five round one and some don't let you hunt with folding stock and "assault rifle" type gear. Also most game wardens will question what actually you are doing out there with that rifle than a regular rifle. It just kind of looks bad. Especially in my neck of the woods with the border so close and the long ranges present. They will ask you alot of questions.

Secondly, is all that UV and thermal scope equipment necessary and legal? I use a regular scope fine and iron sights even! Why do you need an extra edge? Hunting is alot of luck and you can always practice and improve your skills which matter the most
I think in most states hunting at night is illegal and I am not sure but probably thermal scopes too. I supposed it would depend. Also silencers are illegal in some states and in some states they are legal but not for hunting and you may need a special license for them. It all depends on the state.

Finally why do you need the silencer and all the other gear unless to poach?
You need to take a deer with one shot with or without a silencer the deer will feel getting hit or the bullet nearby and run. Secondly the only reason for it would be to not bother residents near by, but that wouldn't be that big of reason and the bullet can go really far which wouldn't be a good idea in a crowded place. And the silencer works great at muzzle blast and does change the point of impact verses no silencer but won't totally silence the bullet because the bullet will still make a supersonic crack all the way to your target. It will echo in canyons. Unless you load the bullet to subsonic velocities it will do this but then its basically limited to dear 2 feet in front of you. But, the silencer is effective just not totally silent.

So, those are some things to consider before you get your silencer.
The mp5-sd is not a deer hunting gun or cartridge at all. The 9mm is only good for deer at really close range. The mp5-sd is probably illegal in most states to hunt deer with first for the cartridge and second for the integral silencer. I haven't checked but don't know if you can even buy it without a license from the BATF. And then it is a semi-auto submachine gun so I don't know whether that would fit into rifle or pistol? If it were to be allowed as the barrel is short and the velocity is low due to the multi-ported barrel that makes regular 9mms subsonic so you won't hear the crack of the bullet. A regular mp5 would be better even with a silencer fitted and not using subsonic ammo the crack of the bullet would be heard but there would be more power. That is to say if it had to be it is not humane at all and would limit you to 25ish yards, preferably less. The 9mm is a pistol round and for a semi-auto which typically have weaker chamberings than revolvers. A .357mag would be better.

Try reading some publications on hunting or join a hunting club they will give you insight and mentoring on how to hunt. Being educated and safe is the key!

I would suggest reading a book on hunting techniques, the best weapon is your mind hone in your skills and you wont need an assault rifle try a 30-06 or 12 ga.

So you chose a .223 cal which is marginal for body shots on deer over a a 9mm that is much less suitable for deer. Surely you do not expect us to believe this silly question?

But if you really need one, choose from the list on www.subguns.com

I would put the poodle shooter up and get a nice DSA made FAL or JLD PTR or Springfield Armory M1A. :-) J/K

I use a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag.

By the time the deer hears the shot, it'll be too late any way. Try silencing yourself - the deer will probably hear you long before you see it.
