I think buying such an expensive car for someone so young is a little too much. You can still get her a car for christmas because she is such a good student and would be able to pay for the insurance but get something that is not as expensive as a BMW.

Who hasn't?
It's out of proportion to get ANY kid a Mercedes I'd say.
IF you're really very well off and parents in your crowd and parents of kids in her crowd THEMSELVES have Mercedes there may be some sort of norm I do not know about.
If so stop reading..
But from where I am viewing the question ANY car for a teenager provided as a gift by parents is something special. It should be safe. The kid should have serious RESPONSIBILITY from the gate - at an absolute minimum - GETTING and paying for the insurance, the maintenance, etc.
If she has a job she presumably could be buying her car herself.
I have the feeling there are oher questions here in the background which are not mentioned, Like: Do oher parents in your crowd get their kids fancy cars? Is there some existence of
[[unadmitted]] comparisons and competitions among parents?
My own economic level and circle is pretty much limited to people with used cars so questions of this kind don't really come up very often.
Best ofluck..

way toooo much, she needs a usa made vehicle, because imported vehicles cost a lot of money for repair. I wanted a mercedes since I was about 12, I was going to get one, until I met my husband, and his automotive shop. I have never seen so many mercedes' in my life. So many electrical problem. A women got in a car crash and they had to replace her whole wiring harness! Repairs are very costly and if she needed to replace a alternator it would cost over 800 to 1,000 to repair it. An oil change would be 32 dollars or more. It will not help her, she is a young person 17 with a mercedes? The insurance company knows that mercedes have costly repairs. so she will get a horrible rate. I say no, buy her a chevy blazer or toyota or honda. She just wants a mercedes to look good, she won't look good once she is getting you to drive her to school or on the bus because her car broke down.

It sounds like a very nice gift and she should be so lucky to have a mom such as yourself. The problem with the gift, however, is that it creates unrealistic expectations of when she has to be in the real world supporting herself. I had this friend in high school whose parents got her a new BMW for her birthday as well as trips to foriegn countries, a charge card, etc. She also got good grades and never had to work after school as I did. After we both finished college, she had a very difficult time living within her means. Her parents were always bailing her out because she would spend her paycheck on clothes and so on. Unless you want to finance her way throughout her life when she grows up, I would advise against the mercedes.

It is great she is an honor student, but this is too much too early. What are you really teaching her about finance? Yes, get a car then Mercedes after graduation from college. Starting out big gives her nothing to look forward to. You are doing her an injustice.

Make her earn half of the cost. If you can afford this, then donate some of the funds to a charity that helps people. Give me a break. What are we doing to our children these days? I used to have pride in getting A's and that was enough. This kind of reward feeds our obnoxiously greedy and rich culture. Do her a favor and send her for several months to India or some other country where she can see how real people live.

Buy a 17 yr-old a Mercedes, are you joking? Her first car should be a junker she buys herself.
Make her earn what she wants. It will make her a better person in the long run.
Then if she hits hard times later in life, she'll know how to deal with it herself and not go running for Mommy and Daddy.
Should you help her as a parent when she really needs it? Sure.
Buying her a M-B because she wants it badly is not one of those times. Reward her for her good behavior by showing her you love her in other ways than throwing money at her.

My first car cost $500....and before you start saying well there's inflation that was only 4 years ago! My current car which is a nice, steady, reliable car cost around $3500. I really don't understand everyones need for such extravagance when a good reliable SAFE car is best. Get her a Passat...they're rated one of the safest cars out there and they're affordable so when they smashes it you won't want to throttle her so very much.

i would wait until she graduated, but if you know that shes responsible than get it. I am 22 and I am on car number 2. I now have a 2006 Corolla. As long as I'm in school and make good grades my family gets whatever I want (yes I'm privileged, not spoiled). If you are spending the money you mother has not say so, who's signing the check? You correct, hope this helps

If you can afford it then you can afford a security driving class. She needs to learn how to handle a car with that much power.
You also have to know if your daughter is responsible enough not to drive to fast, have the radio blasting etc...
I would send my kid to special class and buy at first a car with less power and if she proofs she can handle the car for a year, then I would get her the mercedes.
